MLK Weekend 2018 - Things to Do in NYC
MLK Weekend 2018 - Things to Do in NYC

This year, Martin Luther King Jr. Day takes place on Monday January 15th. And, since this is New York City, there will be plenty of opportunities to use that time for enriching activities.

But before we dive in to the weekend’s happenings, let's take a brief look at how MLK day formed in the US.

A Brief History of MLK Day

MLK Day is a federal holiday marking the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. King, who was a seminal figure in the Civil Rights Movement, using the tactics of nonviolence and civil disobedience to progress race relations in the US. King won a Nobel Peace Prize for his civil disobedience efforts, the most famous of which were the organization of the Selma to Montgomery marches. After King’s assassination in 1968, the country went into mourning for the untimely loss of the great leader.

In his honor, MLK Day was signed into law in 1983 by President Ronald Reagan. It has been celebrated on the third Monday of every January ever since.
