There are a plethora of things to do New York City this month. Read on for some of NYC's events this May.
A Passion for Jade
This exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art features carved jades from the collection of Herbert R. Bishop that was bequeathed to the Metropolitan Museum in 1902. It consists of more than a thousand pieces most of which are Chinese but a few are from Mughal India. The exhibition is presently on view in Gallery 222 at the Met Fifth Avenue. Tickets cost $25 for adults, $17 for seniors and $12 for students with valid ID. Admission is free for children under 12.
May happenings in NYC that focus on science include this 5,000 square foot exhibition that will be held on the grounds of the New York Hall of Science. It features two major artifacts from the US space program: an Atlas booster along with an interactive replica of a Friendship 7 Mercury capsule and a Titan II booster with a replica of a Gemini capsule. The exhibition also features pictures and words about the space program's history. Admission is $15 for adults and $12 for kids between the ages of 2 and 17. The Hall of Science is located in Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens.
Taste of Greece 2016
Experience the wines of Greece along with Greek food and culture when you attend this event. Visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy wines from almost 50 Greek wineries as well as food from Greek restaurants that include Amali and Greek Tribeca. Live music will be provided by Irini Haridou from Athens along with other musicians. Taste of Greece 2016 will be held at City Winery NYC on Varick Street on May 18th. General Admission tickets cost $75 while VIP tickets cost $125. All proceeds are going to charity.
Food-oriented May happenings in NYC include the 10th Annual Brooklyn Uncorked. This event features award winning wines from wineries in New York State. Along with the wine, visitors get to enjoy food from some of Manhattan and Brooklyn's most popular restaurants. Those attending the event most be over 21 and have valid ID. General admission is $70. The event is being held at 26 Bridge Street in Brooklyn.
NYC Pop Fest
Music-focused May happenings in NYC include this event that started out as a house show for friends in 1996. It and has since grown into one of the most popular indie pop events anywhere in the world. This year the lineup includes bands like California's Soft Science and Tiny Fireflies from Illinois. The fest runs from May 19th to May 22nd. There are numerous venues including Baby's All Right on Broadway and Le Poisson Rouge on Bleecker Street.
Queens New Music Festival
The 5th Annual Queens New Music Festival kicks off on May 19th. The festival is a product of Musica Reginae Productions along with Random Access Music. Featured artists include marimbist Makoto Nakura and modern classical ensemble Exceptet. The festival will run from May 19th to May 22 and venues include the Secret Theatre in Long Island and The Church-in the-Gardens in Forest Hills.
