The Roc Race

This 5k obstacle run features giant obstacles along with a waterslide that is four stories tall. Inspired by game shows, the Roc Race is open to everyone over the age of 13. Tickets will be available on September 9 and will cost $68. The Roc Race will be held on September 10 in the Aviator Sports and Event Center at 3159 Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn. The hours will be from 12:00PM to 7:00PM.

 

The Vendy Awards

Each year, the city’s best street food vendors are judged by a celebrity panel at the Vendy Awards as well as by visitors to the event. Visitors get to sample foods from all of the nominated vendors. Proceeds from the awards go to the Street Vendor Project, an organization that fights for vendors’ rights. The 2016 Vendy Awards will be held on Saturday September 17. The venue will be Governor’s Island. The event runs from 12:30PM to 5:00PM and general admission tickets are $100 along with a fee of $5.75. Not only are ticketholders able to sample food from more than 25 vendors, they get unlimited Brooklyn Brewery beer.

 

Blues, Brews and Botany

This event is organized by the New York Botanical Garden and provides attendees with music from blues and bluegrass bands, beer along with a look at beer’s botanical side. Ticketholders will listen to bands like the Paul Joseph Blues Band and Moonshine Falls. They will also get to sample a wide range of beers and ciders as well as listen to a talk from brewers and botanists about beer’s botanical side. Blues, Brews and Botany will be held on the weekend of September 17 and 18 at the New York Botanical Garden. The Botanical Garden is located at 2900 Southern Blvd in the Bronx. The hours are from 12:00PM to 5:00PM each day. The tickets for non-members cost $30 dollars and come with a free tumbler for tasting beer; members will pay only $5 for the tumbler.

 

The Brooklyn Book Festival

The Brooklyn Book Festival is the largest free book festival held in the state.It draws in thousands of visitors and offers them the opportunity to see discussions between writers and to purchase from a large book marketplace. At the 2016 Brooklyn Book Festival, there will be over 300 writers of fiction, nonfiction and poetry participating in a number of panels. Among the many authors participating will be Mike Curato, Andrea Davis Pinckney and Soman Chainani. The event will be held on September 18 from 10:00AM to 6:00PM at 209 Joralemon Street in Brooklyn.

 

The Affordable Art Fair

This festival offering relatively inexpensive art will showcase the work of over 500 hundred artists. There will be more than 70 galleries from all over the world participating, including local galleries. The artwork that will be on show and available for purchase includes photographs, paintings and sculptures; many of these original pieces of art will be priced below $5,000. The Affordable Art Fair will be open to the public from September 29 to October 2 in the Metropolitan Pavilion at 125 West 18th Street. The hours are from 11:00AM to 6:00PM on the 29th, 11:00AM to 8:00PM on the 30th (admission is free from 6:00PM to 8:00PM), from 11:00AM to 8:00PM on October 1 and from 11:00AM to 6:00PM on October 2. Tickets will be $20 per day if purchased at the event and $18 if purchased online.
