Summer Activities in NYC

New York City is home to people from around the world, as well as vibrant city life full of events well worth your time. As a resident of the StuyTown housing community you have one of the world’s great cities on your doorstep. This summer NYC will be home to a multitude of events and activities to enjoy. Here is a brief listing of standout events over the summer months that offer entertainment for adults and children.


Museum Mile Festival: If you enjoy high culture and art the Museum Mile Festival is not to be missed. On Tuesday June 9th famous art museums open their doors offering free admission for three hours only in festival of culture and live musical performances. String quartets and jazz ensembles will provide the atmosphere as you walk from Fifth Avenue from 82nd to 105th Streets.   

Father's Day: Father’s Day 2015 falls on Sunday, June 21st. While there is no singular event celebrating the day there are several sports bars, spas and steak restaurants of all types offering events for the special day.  

The 2015 Governors Ball Music Festival: Governor’s Ball is arguably the top music festival in NYC this summer. This three day event will take place from Friday June 5th through Sunday June 7th at Randall's Island Park. Three day passes are available allowing you to take in the sights and sounds at your leisure. Performers this year include: Drake, The Black Keys, Weird Al Yankovic, Björk and Ryan Adams.   


Macy's Fourth of July Fireworks: Nn Saturday the 4th of July Macy’s plans to put on a grand show. With over 40,000 fireworks set to a musical score and last 25 minutes this is a fireworks show you will not forget. There are several good viewing locations but the best of them are located on the Brooklyn Bridge and its nearby park.   

Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest: This famous eating event will originate from Coney Island and be covered nationwide on ESPN. Aside from the speed eating you can look forward to musical performances from local artists.

Taylor Swift's 1989 World Tour: There are more musical events going on in NYC then can be listed in this brief guide. However, Taylor Swift is not to be missed. The top selling artist will be performing on July 10th and 11th at nearby MetLife Stadium.  


The US Open: For tennis fans, the US Open is one of the sport’s great events. Starting on August 31st and lasting until September 13th the open will be at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center at Flushing Meadows–Corona Park in Queens, New York for the event. If you consider yourself a fan you owe it to yourself to see the Open.   

Other Sights To See

Governors Island: No summer would be complete without a visit to Governor’s Island. Located in the upper bay area this lush green island is free from automobiles and offers plenty to do. You can enjoy the simple joy of the outdoors or take in the dance or music events that occur on the island throughout the Summer.
