With the new year New York City has several different activities for you to take part in either by yourself or with friends and family. January 2017 has activities ranging from cultural events to cruises  for you to take part in. Here is a brief overview of various activities in the city.

  • The Holiday Train Show: is an excellent outing for the whole family. This event takes place at the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory and features model trains traveling among 150 miniatures representing famous landmarks from all over NYC. This event runs from January 3rd through the 16th.   

  • Free Days At Wave Hill: is a month long event running from the 3rd to the 31st with free entry if you arrive by noon. Aside from the Wave Hill Cultural Center you can also enjoy their 28 acre garden with a lovely view of the Hudson River.    

  • Hip Hop Shakespeare: offers a completely original interpretation of the famous play Othello. Running from the 4th through the 15th this modern take on Shakespeare is a hip hop saga that is both fast paced and entertaining. Shows are at The Westside Theatre.

  • Jazz: Birdland is offering a wide assortment of Jazz musicians, performers, and singers throughout the month of January. They are located at West 44th Street.

  • The Fantasticks: if you are looking for a romantic musical The Fantasticks has been a funny and moving performance for many years. The show will be running at the Ann Bernstein Theater through February 28th.   

  • Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom Of The Opera: is a true classic that needs no introduction. As one of the most famous musicals of all time it is considered required viewing if you are a fan of theatre. It will be running from January until June 17th at the Majestic Theatre.  

  • International Sightseeing Cruise: if you’re looking to get outdoors and see the sites consider this standing room only sightseeing event. This hour long cruise runs from January 5th through March 31st and leaves from Pier 15. Highlights the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the Manhattan skyline.

  • Chicago: an award winning musical Chicago blends together song, dance, and good storytelling into an unforgettable musical. The show will be running at the Ambassador Theatre from January 4th through April 2nd.   

  • A Dinner Cruise: leaving Pier 61 this 2.5 hour cruise includes a majestic view of the city, a full dining buffet, and a live DJ performance for dancing. This cruise run by Spirit Cruises will be ongoing until January 28th.  

  • Avenue Q: is a well known comedy show involving puppets. This adult themed show is both funny and witty and well known for its catchy songs. Performances will be running at the New World Stages from January 7th through March 31st.   

  • Cirque du Soleil’s Paramour: is the latest from the world famous acrobatic, music, and dance troupe. Paramour tells the tale of a young actress living in the golden age of Hollywood. The show runs from January 7th through the 31st at the Lyric Theatre.    

  • Various Attractions: lastly, the NY Historical Museum, Ripley’s Believe it or Not, and the 9/11 Tribute Center are all offering discounted tickets throughout the month of January for single visitors and families.
