The reason for the recent rechristening of the Flatiron District as New York’s “Fitness District” is because of the nearly 50 boutique studios, gyms and retailers that have moved into the neighborhood in the past few years. Nestled in among the rest is one of the best, Exhale, whose tagline tells it all: “Barre, Yoga, Spa.” With two locations conveniently close to Stuyvesant Town, Exhale is a great place to “transform your body and balance your mind.”
Located at 19 West 21st Street, this convenient branch features amenities you should expect from any boutique fitness studio:
- Barre and Yoga studio
- Changing rooms
- Daily lockers
- A gift shop featuring wellbeing products
You can divide your time between fitness and rejuvenation, between high intensity interval training (HIIT) and facials. Exhale offers both pampering and power workouts so you can vary your visits.
On the fitness side of Exhale, sign up for barre, cardio or yoga classes taught by high-energy instructors. Within each category, you can choose from several options. For example, the barre programs offer:
- Core Fusion Barre (choose either Basic or Advanced)
- Core Fusion Barre Express (45 minutes)
- Core Fusion Barre + Cardio (30 minutes)
After a typical New York week you can indulge at Exhale with spa treatments:
In addition, treat yourself to acupuncture sessions tailored to your body’s challenges, such as facial acupuncture, stress reduction, or digestive relief. Acupuncturists operating at Exhale (both locations) are independently licensed practitioners with Masters degrees in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.
If You’re Going
Exhale’s Flatiron studio can be reached at (212) 279-4009. Their hours are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 6:30 am to 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm; Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:45 am to 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm; Saturday from 8:15 am to 4:00 pm; and Sunday from 9:15 am to 6:00 pm.
Exhale’s local twin to the “Fitiron” district is its Gramercy Park location, inside the Gansevoort Hotel at 420 Park Avenue South at 29th Street. The amenities are similar to the Flatiron District facility, with these additional enhancements:
- Zen lounge
- Changing rooms
You can turn to either location for special well-being programs, like nutrition, core evolution classes, retreats and bridal boot camp. Other specialties cater to teens, or to skin rejuvenation and therapy.
Exhale’s many studios worldwide and across the nation all feature similar barre, yoga and spa treatments. You can find Exhale in Bermuda, the Turks & Caicos and in great cities like Miami and Boston. The combination of calorie-shredding workout and skin-pampering spa makes Exhale a distinctly different boutique studio.
At all Exhale locations in New York and elsewhere, you can bundle classes to lower the per-class cost. Single Core Fusion classes at Flatiron and Gramercy start at $37, but a 20-pack at $580 drops the per-class price to $26. Yoga classes are $26 singly, with a 20-pack coming in at $415 ($20.75 each). A deep tissue massage is $115 for half an hour and $200 for 90 minutes.
If You’re Going
You can reach Exhale’s Gramercy Park location at (646) 380-5330. Its hours are Monday through Friday from 6:00 am to 9:00 pm and weekends from 8:30 am to 9:00 pm.
Both locations of Exhale provide the same high caliber of service, support and encouragement. An insider's tip from co-founders Fred DeVito and Elisabeth Halfpapp: try the Power Facial. They and Chief Operating Officer Julia Sutton name it as their favorite indulgence.
