Restaurant Spolight: Union Square Cafe

If you consider yourself a foodie or simply love a delicious meal, Union Square Cafe will be right up your alley. This restaurant, serving up contemporary American cuisine in an elegant, yet casual ambiance, is top notch.

Union Square Cafe was opened in 1985 by owner, Danny Meyer, and is an extremely popular dining destination. With five James Beard Awards and a ranking of #1 in Zagat Survey's as New York's most popular restaurant nine times, this restaurant is a culinary delight.

Chef Carmen Quagliata's impressive creations, which utilizes fresh, local ingredients, plays homage to his roots, which are Californian and southern Italian.

Start your meal with oysters on the half shell, fried calamari with anchovy mayonnaise, beef sirloin carpaccio, or crispy soft shell crab. For your entree, go with the eggplant ravioli, ricotta gnocchi, grilled Atlantic swordfish, grilled lamb chops, or the octopus, cod and mussel brodetto. There are several vegetables and sides that you can add to your meal, such as sautéed corn, smoked paprika and scallions or fresh shell beans with extra virgin olive oil and pecorino.

Get a specialty cocktail, beer, or wine to pair with your meal. There are also unusual soft drinks, like pomegranate/hibiscus, ginger, and grapefruit.

Make sure to save room for dessert, as there are several mouthwatering options, such as key lime mousse, grilled peach sundae, blueberry pie, salted chocolate cake, and house made sorbets and ice creams. If you'd like a more savory dessert, go with the farmstead cheese, served with whole wheat crackers and walnut raisin bread.
