One such restaurant is Barbounia. Barbounia is a modern Mediterranean restaurant that offers a unique menu influenced by Mediterranean areas such as Southern Italy, Morocco, Southern France and Greece.
Barbounia is run by Alon Jibli and David Sassron, while the head chef is Amitzur Mor. Chef Mor grew up in Israel, where he attended the Tadmor Culinary School. After working at some of the most acclaimed restaurants in Tel Aviv, he moved to New York City in 1999. Over the next 14 years, he worked at numerous 3 and 4-star restaurants under several renowned chefs. He has received accolades from the Wall Street Journal, Zagat and Michelin, to name a few. The restaurant is located in the Flatrion district of Manhattan, very close to the Stuyvesant Town apartment community.
The restaurant boasts a lively atmosphere that's perfect for friends getting together for lunch, brunch or dinner. The restaurant encourages a social atmosphere with its large communal wooden tables and pillowed banquettes as well as the design of the restaurant itself, which is very much in line with authentic Mediterranean restaurants. An open kitchen adds to the communal ambiance with the smells and sounds of the preparation of food. In addition to the open kitchen, the tall arched ceilings, which are divided by Moorish-style columns, helps keep the dining space from ever feeling cramped. The decor of the restaurant is brought together with renowned photographer, Francesco Carrozzini's gorgeous black and white photograph, "Buenos Aires," as well as Paul Gerben's stunning, "Marilyn."
Food and Drinks
Although focused on the Mediterranean area of the world, the menu is quite varied - just as the many cultures around the Mediterranean are. Barbounia focuses on providing an authentic experience all while using only the freshest seasonal and local ingredients, from the meat to the produce. Some of the staples of the menu include fresh homemade bread and pizza as well as the raw bar. Barbounia emphasizes sustainable grown and caught meat and seafood with all of its dishes.
On the menu, you'll be able to find Mediterranean staples that include Hummus, Roasted Eggplant and Spicy Feta in addition to appetizers such as Crispy Calamari, Yellowfin Tuna Tartar and Iron Skillet Shrimp. Fish-based entrees include Grilled Atlantic Salmon, Seared Diver Scallops and Grilled Local Swordfish, while land-based entrees include Pan Roasted Crescent Farms Duck and Lamb Kebab Terracotta, just to name a few of the options. The lunch menu boasts a wide variety of sandwiches and pizzas, while the brunch menu includes specialty egg dishes, such as the Foie Gras Sausage Shakshuka and Turkish Eggs. These are just a few examples of the expansive menu, although you can also choose to order a $24 Prix Fixe Lunch, which includes one appetizer, a salad and either a Barbounia Burger, a Falafel Pita or a Marinated Free Range Chicken Sandwich as well as a desert.
Even though Barbounia is known for its incredible Mediterranean food, its drink list is just as impressive - their extensive wine lists contains roughly 800 names from all over the world. Each bottle is carefully chosen, as evidenced by the "Best of Award of Excellence" achievement bestowed upon Barbounia by Wine Spectator Magazine.
