Restaurant Spotlight: Friend of a Farmer
Restaurant Spotlight: Friend of a Farmer

When it comes to restaurants in New York City, there are certainly no shortage of places from which to choose. However, there are some restaurants that dramatically stand out from the rest, like Friend of a Farmer, bringing you excellent food and an ambiance that can't be beat.

Friend of a Farmer was opened in 1986 by owners, Carrie and Terry, and designed to be reminiscent of a country setting. Terry grew up in upstate New York in a farming community, and it was this warm and cozy ambiance the owners wanted their patrons to experience in their restaurant. With two fireplaces, beautifully handcrafted wooden columns, flowered tapestry on the walls, and pots and pans hung on the walls as decor, you can't help but be embraced in the country feel. On nice days, outdoor seating is also available and provides an equally nice dining experience.

This restaurant, located in Gramercy Park at 77 Irving Place, is situated just over half a mile from our Stuyvesant Town community. Open daily, and serving up breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner, business hours are as follows: Sunday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.

The chef, Modesto Batista, focuses on using fresh, local, seasonal ingredients in his culinary creations. The menus are diverse and caters to a variety of tastes. The breakfast menu offers homemade granola with low fat yogurt and fresh fruit, a variety of omelettes, pancakes and waffles, and a variety of other favorites, such as eggs benedict, smoked salmon platter, and corn beef hash. The brunch menu is similar to the breakfast menu, but also offers a nice selection of sandwiches, like the grilled cheese or the chicken wrap, and salads, such as curried chicken and poached salmon. The lunch menu has a little bit of everything on it and includes omelettes, sandwiches and wraps, and speciality dishes, such as chicken pot pie, striped bass, and hearty skillet white shepards pie. The dinner menu is truly impressive and has an amazing selection of meats and fish, including roast chicken for two, braised beef short rib, lamb meatballs, grass-fed filet, deep fried rabbit, herb crusted cod, and salmon.

Make sure to order a fresh squeezed juice or a specialty house cocktail to go with your meal. The syrups are homemade, and the liquors infused in-house, bringing you the best of the best. A nice selection of wines are also available and for the most part, come from boutique vineyards that are family owned.

Friend of a Farmer is the perfect spot for a private party with friends and family and can host between 13 and 23 people in the private dining rooms.
