Skiing in the New York Metro and Surrounding Area

The winter season is the perfect time for skiers to enjoy their hobby. Winter is when the white mountaintops are at their best. For skiers around the New York City area, there are multiple resorts around that give you the opportunity to enjoy the winter.

Hunter Mountain

Hunter Mountain is a popular destination for skiers, thanks to the Mountain's first six seater chair lift. Riders have access to over 50 snow covered trails. There are three unique mountain areas. Empire Terrain Park has recently expanded, and offers different boxes, jumps, and rails for skiers. Be sure to have patience on the weekends, as they are often crowded. There are multiple bus trips available to take you to Hunter Mountain. While there, popular places to lodge include Mountain View Lodge and Kaatskill Mountain Club.

Windham Mountain

Windham Mountain has 49 trails. The terrain differs from 12 novice trails to advanced double black runs. Half of the mountains are intermediate, which makes Windham a popular choice for skiers just looking to have fun. There are multiple terrain parks, including Big Air Bag, that allows you to practice jumps like a daredevil. Windham also has a First Tracks program where you can ski with a guide before the lift is open to the public. Bus packages are available through Windham, including The Island Ski Tours' Shuttle. The Budget friendly Cave Mountain Hotel is an option for lodging, as well as the Windwood Inn, which offers both hotel rooms and condos.

Thunder Ridge

Thunder Ridge is a family friendly ski resort that strives to provide value for the whole family. Thunder Ridge is a popular choice for large family getaways. Thunder Ridge has over 20 trails that will challenge both novice and regular skiers. For transportation, consider taking the Metro-North Ski Train from Grand Central. The local Holiday Inn has a Thunder Ridge special rate.

Whiteface Mountain

Whiteface Mountain has famously hosted the Winter Olympics twice. The Mountain is known for its over 4,000 foot high peak, and large vertical drop. Skiers have access to over 35 acres of land that will challenge you both physically and mentally. There are close to 100 trails, and beginners are welcome at the 4 different terrain parks. There are bus stops that offer transportation to Whiteface Mountain, through Adirondack Trailways. Lodging is available at The Motel Ledge Rock at Whiteface, as well as the Lake Placid Lodge.
