With 80 acres of grounds, StuyTown is a unique destination within Manhattan, and includes a wide array of lush plants, shrubs, trees, and flowers. New plants are brought in throughout the year to add seasonal life to the grounds and provide a sense of tranquility in the midst of the Big City.
The trees recently planted around the Oval are ornamental trees which will remain below the height of the tall shade trees. They are evergreens and will retain their leaves throughout the year. Tree species include Ilex Nellie Stevens and Compact Cypress trees, and Magnolia grandiflora Brackens Brown. The growth period for these trees ranges from five to eight years.
A larger variety of shrubs has been planted, including a mix of evergreens, annuals, and perennials, which will continue to grow over the next three to five years. Gardenia Kleims Hardy and Camellia japonica are among the evergreen shrubs planted around the Oval, with blooms expected from spring through fall among the two shrub types. Other shrubs, which are not evergreens, include Nandia Fire Power, Hydrangea, Viburnum pragense, and Winterthur. Vinca minor groundcover have also been planted along with perennials such as Heuchera Coral Bells, which will continue to grow over the next year, and come in multiple varieties with different colored flowers and leaves.
