Kips Bays was named after New Netherland Dutch Settler Jacobus Hendrickson Kip (1631-1690), who had a farm that ran north of present day 30th Street and along the East River. The last farmhouse was demolished in 1851. Kips Bay is a part of Manhattan Community Board 6.

Kips Bay boasts a huge AMC/Loews movie theater and a 44,000 square foot Fairway Super Market. There is a 24-hour Rite-Aid and a Crunch Fitness. For weekend brunches head over to Penelope but be expect a line out the door. This area is home to many Middle Eastern restaurants such as Bamiyan, Vatan, Saravanaa Bhavan and many more.
For children there is the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club which conducts many programs such as Math Academy, Science Projects, Aquatics Programs, Summer Camps, Performing Arts, Teen empowerment and more. At StuyTown (formerly known as PCVST), they also have a program in Oval Kids called Appleseed’s which includes an open space for playing, as well as, signature programs like “songs for Seeds”.
