Lower East Side Girls Club
Perhaps you are looking for volunteer opportunities near our lower east side apartments or perhaps you're interested in learning more about worthwhile community programs in our area. Regardless, The Lower East Side Girls Club (LESGC) is a wonderful organization offering invaluable programs and services to girls and young women.
Started in 1996, LESGC's mission is to empower and train girls and young women between the ages of 8 and 23 to be leaders, breaking the cycle of poverty in the local community. Through the programs offered by LESGC, the girls will develop self-confidence, learning and growing as a person, all the while having fun doing so.
The LESGC Center for Community is located at 101 Avenue D in New York. This girls club facility is primarily for girls who live or attend school in the East Village/Lower East Side. A large variety of programs are available, offering wonderful opportunities these girls might not otherwise have.
Girl Fit for Life is intended to encourage a healthy and active lifestyle through dance, movement, and nutrition classes. Both healthy snacks and meals are offered at Clare's Cafe, which is also located at the Lower Eastside Girls Club. This program also teaches the girls to prepare healthy food for themselves and their families.
Tween Academy is an after school program offering tutoring, pre-career exploration, special conferences, and enrichment activities for younger girls. This program is intended to assist the girls in future endeavors by laying the groundwork they need to be successful as they go through school and beyond.
College & Career Prep offers teen girls the opportunity to learn about different careers and opportunities via career training, internships, conferences, and mentoring.
Environmental Education allows the girls to participate in environmental and community activities. For instance, through Girls Gone Green the participants learn about food justice and urban farming. There is also a biology science lab, called BioBus, which educates the girls in earth science and cell biology.
In addition to the above programs, several other programs are offered. The Lower East Side Girls Group also runs social venture businesses that give teens and young mothers the opportunity to gain job training, as well as employment. Some of these businesses include Celebrate Cafe, The Art and Community Gallery, and Sweet Things Bake Shop.
Enrollment for the school year for the LESCG programs is in September. While there is no fee for the girls to participate in these programs that are located near our lower east side apartments, the family's of the girls are asked to participate in the volunteer TimeBank.
