A Brief History of the United Nations

The United Nations is an intergovernmental organization that was established with the intention of promoting international cooperation and served to replace the League of Nations, a similar organization that was founded following WWI but was deemed ineffective with the break out of WWII. The United Nations was founded following the end of WWII to help prevent another worldwide conflict. When it was first established, it contained 51 members. It now consists of 193 members. The member states provide voluntary contributions to help run it. It's main headquarters is located in New York City, but it also has offices in Vienna, Geneva and Nairobi. The United Nations consists of six main organs - the Economic and Social Council, the Security Council, the Secretariat, the International Court of Justice, the United Nations Trusteeship Council and the General Assembly. Some of the agencies run by the United Nations System include the World Bank Group, UNICEF, UNESCO, the World Health Organization and the World Food Programme.

History of the United Nations Headquarters

Although the United Nations has several regional headquarters located around the world, only the headquarters located in New York City contain the principal organs of the United Nations, including the Security Council and the General Assembly. Even though the headquarters is located in the middle of Manhattan, the complex is considered extraterritorial. This means that the space it occupies is under the sole administration of the United Nations and not the United States. The U.S. provides local police and fire protection along with numerous other services in return that the headquarters acknowledges most of the local, state and federal laws. The United Nations headquarters has six official languages, including English, Spanish, French, Russian, Chinese and Arabic.

The headquarters consists of roughly 17 to 18 acres, which were arranged for purchase by Nelson Rockefeller for $8.5 million. Before being turned into the United Nations headquarters, the property was used as a slaughterhouse. The complex was designed by a multinational team of architects, including American architect, Wallace K. Harrison. More than 45 designs and variations were produced before a decision was made. There were originally three main buildings within the complex. These include the General Assembly building, the Conference building and the Secretariat building. Construction of the complex began in 1948 and finished in 1952. The construction was financed via a $65 interested-free loan provided by the U.S. government. In 1961, the Dag Hammarskjold Library Building was built added to the complex.

The complex also boasts a notable art collection. There are several large murals within the buildings as well as a number of impressive outdoor sculptures donated as gifts by various countries around the world, such as the "Knotted Gun" statue given by Luxembourg, which depicts a revolver with its barrel tied in a knot.
