Named for the intersection of two NYC thoroughfares (literally a “union” of avenues), Union Square (USQ) has served as a meeting ground and the heart of downtown Manhattan since the 19th Century. Union Square Park is the center of the neighborhood with statues of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln referencing the long history of this public square. Still a popular gathering spot for locals of all walks of life, Union Square maintains the vibe that has made it so vital to the City’s collective spirit and character.
Take advantage of the Peter Cooper Village Stuyvesant Town amenities only a few blocks away from other Union Square apartments. Popular amenities include basketball courts, a roller hockey court, paddle tennis courts, bocce ball, ice rink, community center, on-site parking, playgrounds, concierge service, Greenmarket, day care center, Enterprise car rentals, and more!

Union Square is a U.S. National Historic Landmark in the heart of Manhattan which is bound between 14th Street and 17th Street, with Union Square West lining the west side and Park Avenue South lining the east side. Union Square is famous for its farmer’s market established by Grow NYC, which is held year round on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 8:00am to 6:00pm. Union Square’s Holiday Market is held November 23rd through December 24th and features booths selling anything from jewelry, to clothing, to original works of art, and even food.
Union Square also provides easy access to a major Subway station which services the 4, 5, 6, L, N, Q, and R trains.
Union Square is a great destination for shopping, dining and entertainment and is easily accessible from a StuyTown Union Square apartment. When it comes to restaurants, Union Square is a stalwart of the NYC food scene. Immediately surrounding the park are longtime favorites like the Union Square Coffee Shop, Blue Water Grill, Gotham Bar & Grill, and until recently, the beloved Union Square Café. While no one will mistake the Coffee Shop for 5-star fare, the models-in-waiting wait staff combined with a fun atmosphere and views of the park make it an easy place to pass an afternoon. The Blue Water Grill is one of the area’s more upscale destinations, with an airy feeling and high ceilings thanks to its former life as a bank. The sushi is always on-point, as are the seafood dishes like blackened swordfish and sea bass. Gotham Bar & Grill, proudly sporting a Michelin Star since 2005, has been a local fixture for over 30 years. Their food relies heavily on fresh ingredients from the nearby Greenmarket (more on that below) and ranges from Asian-influenced items like Yellowfin tuna tartare all the way to traditional Italian dishes like wild mushroom risotto and escarole salad with Pecorino and Parmigiano Reggiano. The Union Square Café no longer resides right up the block from Union Square Park but hasn’t moved far, settling at 101 E. 19th St. New location, same crowd-pleasing food, service, and ambience. The Danny Meyer mainstay still earns their reputation on great housemade pasta and reasonably priced prime cuts of meat and fish. Until further notice, the Union Square Café is the ultimate neighborhood destination. For some grilled pizza and wine pairings, swing by Pizza Vinoteca located on West 15th Street.
Feel like cooking at home? You’re in luck, because Union Square boasts a Trader Joe’s and a Whole Foods with tons of fresh produce and high-end groceries. Get a little retail therapy by visiting Nordstrom Rack, American Eagle, Lululemon, and Best Buy, to name just a few. On a night out, swing by the W Hotel lounge for cocktails in a comfortable yet upscale atmosphere.
Union Square has much to offer by way of shopping and entertainment. Every New Yorker and tourist should check out the Strand Book Store, which proudly boasts their “18 miles of books.” What that actually means is over 2 million (!) books including rare editions, used books, discounted new copies, and more. It’s a reader’s heaven and is right across the street from one of NYC’s few remaining Barnes & Nobles. When the sun sets, Irving Plaza is a great place to catch some live music in an intimate setting. More live entertainment is available at the nearby Daryl Roth Theatre and the famous club Webster Hall. Catch a movie at the Regal Union Square Stadium or head to the Daryl Roth Theater, which presents large scale off-Broadway shows. Living in a 14th Street apartment gives you quick access to the best food and entertainment that Union Square has to offer.
No matter your interest, Union Square has something for everyone. It’s a refreshing mix of upscale and casual with activities and sights aplenty. Just steps away from StuyTown Apartments, it’s a great destination no matter how your mood strikes you.
Located in Union Square are the New York Film Academy, the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute, and Dance Forum NY. Just one block west of Union Square is both the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, and Parsons The New School For Design. On West 16th street is the Children’s International Workshop Elementary School and on Irving Place is the Gramercy Arts High School.
Back in the 90s when “Greenmarket” was still an unfamiliar term, USQ had a thriving gathering of the Tri-State area’s best farm stands. Still the city’s biggest, this greenmarket is held right in Union Square Park 4 days a week (Mon, Wed, Fri, Sat). Much more than just produce, eager patrons also go for fish, meat, baked goods, cheese, wines, and more, all of it local. When you need your farmer’s fix on a Sunday or just don’t want to deal with the crowds, StuyTown Apartments has our own greenmarket every Sunday (May-November) with all of Union Square’s best stands.
