Introducing Convenient Composting

StuyTown Property Services is very excited to share our latest green initiative. Beginning December 1st, you can drop compost in the brown bins conveniently located in the recycling area of your building.

We've partnered with the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) and GrowNYC to bring these bins to residents, making it easy and hassle-free to "go green" and help our community become a shining example of eco-friendly living in New York City.

Composting has been available every Sunday at the Greenmarket for the past two years, but once a week proved to be too little. Since launching this program at the Greenmarket, hundreds of residents have requested a permanent composting facility and, working closely with DSNY and GrowNYC, we are happy to now make that available.

How To Participate

The process is quick and easy: collect your food scraps, food-soiled paper, and plants in any container or bag, and then empty that bag in the bin.

Please note: you will need to close the bin securely after use. You can do this by pushing the lid closed until you hear a click and then lowering the orange handle.

Why Compost?

DSNY turns what would otherwise be landfill waste into compost or renewable energy. Your trash will

  • Create healthier soil, crops, and plants
  • Nourish our city's sidewalk trees
  • Reduce reliance on fossil fuel
  • Help NYC produce less waste

You may be surprised to learn that over 3,000 tons of compostable materials are thrown out every day in New York City. With your help, we have the chance to make a significant impact on that number, and in turn, make a cleaner and sustainable home for us all.
