Our Sustainability Initiatives - Plant Life at StuyTown
PLANT LIFE
AN URBAN OASIS
StuyTown, with its 80 acres of grounds, offers a distinctive oasis in Manhattan, boasting a diverse array of plants and flowers that are continuously refreshed throughout the year. Our dedicated Horticulture team works tirelessly to maintain the landscape, focusing on sustainability and biodiversity. Strategies include organic maintenance, reducing vehicle traffic for eco-friendliness, and implementing water-efficient practices. Recently, ornamental trees and a variety of shrubs, both evergreen and seasonal, have been added, enhancing the beauty of the community. We invite you to appreciate the lush greenery that sets our community apart.
FROM STUMP TO TREE
A LIVING TRANSITION
Today, I am a Sunspot Sunflower—a bright, pollinator‑friendly plant helping bees and other beneficial insects all summer long. I’m growing in a former tree stump that’s been thoughtfully reused as a natural planter. While I bloom, my roots are helping improve and enrich the soil inside this stump. In Fall 2026, this space will transition again—this planter will be removed and a new permanent tree will be planted here. The healthy, amended soil I help create now will support my future tree neighbor for many years to come.
MONTHLY GARDEN CLUB
COMMUNITY EVENTS
Our community Garden Club for residents is lead by StuyTown's Director of Grounds, Melissa Lareau, who has over twenty years of experience with plants, soil, and compost. Join us on the 15th of every month at 4pm in the Election Room for a different plant-related topic and hands-on activities! No registration is required. This month, join us for a hands-on, buzz‑worthy adventure celebrating the incredible world of pollinators. This special Plant Club event takes you inside the fascinating lives of honeybees, mason bees, and wild native bees and why our gardens depend on them.
